What is NAD+?

These days, it can be hard to cut through all the marketing fluff and actually find the science.

Especially when everyone is taking notice… and people are starting to notice the benefits of NAD+.

The old saying goes “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”. So while some have over-hyped NAD+ and what it does, forward-thinking doctors recognize the benefits, especially when combined with other nutritional supplements.

NAD+ 101

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a co-enzyme found in all living cells. It’s one of the fundamental building blocks of life because it turns nutrients into energy.

NAD+ is a critical factor in many cell functions including energy production, mitochondrial function, DNA repair, regulation of circadian rhythm and even things like gene expression.

Our mitochondria are the energy dynamos of or cells. Unfortunately, mitochondria can get “flaky” as we age. In fact, some theories of aging hold that the decay of our mitochondria could be the key factor in aging.

Research suggests that mitochondrial decay can improve through boosting NAD+. Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, or NAD+, is found in all human cells. The NAD+ in your body determines how much of the food you just ate will power your body and how many of the vitamins and minerals will go to waste.

As a coenzyme, NAD+ binds with other proteins to provide DNA repair, mitochondrial repair and cell repair. In short, NAD+ keeps every cell in your body functioning as they should.

What We Know: NAD+ Decreases with Age

Because NAD+ levels decrease as we age, scientists have theorized that declining levels of NAD+ are associated with aging and age-related illnesses. Since NAD+ is essential for repairing DNA, and the key to staying young is efficient DNA repair, it makes sense that supplementing the body with high-quality NAD+ could decrease the “symptoms” of aging.

The neuronal activity in the brain can decrease as we age, causing us to feel groggy, forgetful, or to have more serious conditions. Supplementing with NAD+ has been shown to improve cognition, reversing dysfunction and degeneration in our brain cells. Helping Your Body Produce More NAD+

There are a number of ways that NAD+ can potentially slow the aging process as a “helper” coenzyme. NAD+ transports electrons from one place to another, inside the cells and mitochondria. NAD+ can be increased naturally, through the introduction of the following into your diet:

  • Green vegetables (particularly asparagus and peas)
  • Milk
  • Yeast
  • Fatty fish, like tuna and sardines
  • Chicken

Regular exercise, eating raw foods, and wearing sunscreen can also help increase NAD production in your body.

You can also take an NAD+ supplement. However many of these supplements are full of artificial ingredients and fillers, so choosing a high-quality NAD+ supplement is crucial to obtaining the benefits associated with NAD+.

In short, NAD+ is a molecule in every single cell we have, playing a crucial role in mitochondrial function. NAD+ allows our mitochondria to convert the food and nutrients we eat into energy, and energy is associated with longevity.

Since NAD+ levels decrease as we age, our mitochondria lose their “spark,” and the aging process is felt. It doesn’t have to happen!
