We’ll admit it. We’re cuckoo for mitochondria!
So you can understand why we’re thrilled to see the interest in Dr. Terry Wahls efforts to teach people about “minding your mitochondria”.
You see, at Avior Nutritionals, we believe strongly that mitochondria – the power plants within our cells which produce energy – can be strengthened, resulting in improved body and brain health.
Your Body’s Unsung Heroes
The mitochondria in our bodies produce energy as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The body then uses this ATP to fuel our everyday activities.
As the bedrock of a clear mind and a healthy body, mitochondria essentially dictate how we feel at any given moment.
Some body cells contain more mitochondria than others – your brain cells in particular, along with the heart and muscle cells.
When mitochondria are working at full capacity, a stronger body and stronger brain will follow.
When Mitochondria Need Support
Our mitochondria weaken and decline as we age, therefore all the issues we commonly associate with aging such as muscle mass decrease, declines in cognitive abilities, excess fat and chronic fatigue are all potentially symptoms of weakened mitochondria.
Diet can also make a huge difference in the health of your mitochondria, particularly in the area of inflammation. Inflammation damages mitochondria. That’s why following the Wahls Protocol has been clinically proven to help reverse this inflammation through anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich meats, fats, vegetables and fruits.
Recap of “Minding Your Mitochondria” Ted Talk
If you haven’t watched it yet… you should. Dr. Wahls spoke with Dave Asprey (Bulletproof 360) on Tedx Talk regarding mitochondria “hacks.” Asprey discussed the fact that our mitochondria are actually bacteria, and that in our most energy-intensive cells (brain, heart, retina), there are as many as 10,000 mitochondria per cell.
When mitochondria are not functioning optimally, fatigue and brain fog results. When the body receives plenty of omega-3 and omega-6 fats, as well as B vitamins, antioxidants, sulfur, magnesium and zinc, the mitochondria can stay healthy for much longer, and can even “perk up” and come back to life.
In fact, when mitochondria are properly fed, the odds of staying healthy increase dramatically.
Both Asprey and Wahls discussed the fact that they currently have more focus, energy and performance ability than they did in their 20’s and 30ths.
Dr. Wahl discussed the fact that when chronic disease is looked at on a cellular and molecular level, the specific disease is almost irrelevant because the results are the same.
The details are laid out in her best selling book – The Wahls Protocol.
Mitochondria are failing because they do not have the nutrition to support their health.
This, in turn, revs up inflammation, and inflammation can manifest in a wide variety of ways.
In short, nutritional inadequacies, inappropriate inflammation and toxic overload can all lead to mitochondria failure, disease and illness.
How Our Products Impact Mitochondria
Giving the body the proper nutrition is critical, especially if you are rebuilding deficiencies that have built up over time.
However, in today’s busy world, we realize that keeping up with your nutrition can often feel like a full-time job. And the reality is that no matter what you do, sometimes you can’t eat your way out of certain nutritional deficits.
That’s why we’ve created a line of easy-to-consume supplements and have faith in the science behind our NAD and biotin supplements as a method of building mitochondria.
